How To Store Pancake Mix

Pancake mix has to be stored in the same conditions as other dry ingredients that we use for baking and cooking such as cake mix, flour and baking soda. Meaning that it should be stored in a cool, dry place.

The best place to store an unsealed pack of pancake mix is in the pantry. However, once the box is opened, it would probably be best for you to keep it in the kitchen cabinet.

Don’t forget that the pancake mix needs to always be sealed tightly before storage. If it comes in a package that isn’t easy to reseal, then you can transfer it into an airtight container or a freezer bag. Whatever the case, make sure that the leftovers are in a tightly sealed package. As you already know, once moisture comes into contact with the mix, it will go bad.

The pancake mix can also be stored in the freezer, where it will be able to retain its quality for a longer time. This is just another storage option, and the majority of people prefer to store their pancake mix at room temperature.

If you’d like to prepare your pancakes within a short time, prepare your pancake batter before-hand and store it in the freezer instead of relying on store-bought mix.

How Long Does Pancake Mix Last?

Similar to other manufactured dry products, pancake mixes packages also have a best-by date. This date is meant to inform you of the length of time at which the product is expected to retain its freshness.

Although some dry products can last for a couple of years past the best-by date, the same doesn’t apply to pancake mix. In this case, pancake mix and baking powder and quite similar.

In most instances, pancake mixes already contain some kind of leavening agent, and as you know such products will easily lose their potency with time. Although the product is dry, when it is stored for a prolonged time, the final product will not taste as good.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that the pancake mix will become flavorless or get spoiled a couple of days after the best-by date, but it being in storage for an extra year will not be as good as you’d expect.

Regarding the difference in the shelf life of a sealed and an unsealed pack of pancake mix, there are none. As long as the mix is stored in the right conditions, it should last for a few more days or weeks past the best-by date.

How To Tell Pancake Mix Is Bad

The conditions here are pretty much similar to those of baking powder. Unless the mixture gets to contact with water, it won’t really get spoiled but will be Insafe for consumption. So, if there are any large wet clumps or growing mold in your pancake mix, it means that moisture or water got in it. You’ll then need to throw it away.

If the mix seems to be okay, it should be safe to consume. Meaning that you can still use it to prepare some pancakes for breakfast.

If the mix has stayed past the best-by date on the packaging, it would be better for you to first try making a little batter for one or two pancakes. This will enable to test whether the mix is still safe for use.

If the pancakes turn out flat, flavorless, dense or feel overly crunchy, then the mix has stayed past its prime. You’ll then need t throw it out for safety reasons. Of course, the product is still usable, but there’s no need for you to make unpalatable pancakes.

About Me

RachaelHello and welcome!

Berry here, with some micro bakery action out of Falls River, MA.

I’m happy to pull on my checkered bakers pants twice a week and bake up a little storm. My doughs are hobby sized, typically 12 loaves to the batch, I’m making an attempt to pull some decent bread out of the oven and I’m enjoying it immensely.

This site is simply a gallery of one doughheads meanderings and a collection point for bakery musings, links & snippets.

Thanks for the visit!
